My Home in the Field of Honor

In the summer of 1914, Frances Wilson Huard is staying at a charming chateau outside Paris when the world begins to crack. At first, the news seems distant, almost absurd: war is coming. The guests debate it over葡萄酒and讨论艺术, certain the mobilization is temporary, that they'll soon return to their careless summer. Then the trains fill with soldiers. Then the first casualties appear. Huard writes with sharp, intimate observation about the moment innocence collapses into reality - not through battles, but through the small silences, the changed faces, the Slowly emptying house. This is wartime memoir at its most immediate: recorded while the guns were still echoing, before history had finished writing itself. A poignant account of how one woman watched Europe walk into the darkness, and what it cost to remain.
