My Friends at Brook Farm

A childs-eye view of one of Americas most famous utopian experiments, rendered with tender precision and period texture. John Van der Zee Sears was born into the Old Colonie Dutch settlements and came of age at Brook Farm in the 1840s, when Dr. George Ripley was building his radical experiment in communal living on Massachusetts farmland. The memoir introduces us to the figures who moved through this extraordinary undertaking: the reformist publisher Horace Greeley, the idealistic Ripley himself, and the constellation of dreamers, laborers, and philosophers who believed they could remake society in miniature. Sears writes not as a historian surveying the rise and fall of Brook Farm, but as a child remembering the smell of the kitchen, the shape of friendships formed in the shadow of grand ambitions, and the particular magic of growing up inside an idea. What emerges is less a defense of Transcendentalist utopianism than a quiet, sometimes bittersweet portrait of childhood itself, set against the most idealistic backdrop 19th-century America could offer.
