Mary Ann Webster Loughborough

1864

Biographies, History - American, History - Warfare

In the summer of 1863, Union forces surrounded Vicksburg and began a siege that would last forty-seven days. Mary Ann Webster Loughborough, a young Southern woman, survived by living in caves dug into the Mississippi hillsides, her home transformed into a tomb. This memoir, published the year after the war ended, is one of the few surviving firsthand accounts from civilians who endured that bombardment. Loughborough writes with unflinching clarity about the strange domesticity of cave life: how she learned to cook in darkness, to sleep through explosions, to raise children in spaces meant for animals. The book's power lies in its juxtaposition of the serene landscape surrounding Vicksburg with the constant rain of shell fire. She captures the psychological strain of perpetual danger, the way fear becomes mundane, the small tragedies and smaller survivals that compose a month and a half under siege. This is not a book about generals or battles. It is about what happens to ordinary people when their city becomes a target, and what it costs to simply endure.
