'my Beloved Poilus

These are not war dispatches. They are the hurried, intimate letters of an American nurse writing to family from inside the Great War, never imagining they'd be read by anyone beyond her circle. Agnes Warner arrived in France in 1914, as the mobilization swept through her village, and found herself at the heart of the conflict, in field hospitals from Divonne-Les-Bains to Paris, tending to French soldiers the locals called their "beloved poilus." What emerges is neither propaganda nor tragedy in the grand sense, but something rarer: the daily heroism of medical work, the exhaustion, the cold, the constant hum of guns in the distance while surgeons and nurses labored to mend broken boys. Warner captures a world in which ordinary people became extraordinary simply by staying. The book endures because it shows war not from the generals' maps but from the ward, where the enemy is suffering, and the only allegiance that matters is to the next patient who needs care.
