My American Diary

In the autumn of 1921, British sculptor Clare Sheridan arrived in America with the keen eye of an artist and the curious gaze of an outsider. Over the following months, she moved through the glittering chaos of New York, encountered the era's most compelling figures, and recorded it all in diary entries that crackle with wit, surprise, and occasional bewilderment. A cousin of Winston Churchill and a celebrated portraitist in her own right, Sheridan brought a uniquely European sensibility to her observations of American society: its breathless energy, its startling inequalities, its intoxicating belief in its own future. She visits factories and speakeasies, meets actors and tycoons, attends society balls and wanders through neighborhoods where the old rules don't apply. The result is not merely a historical document but a living portrait of a nation in transformation, captured by someone who both admired and puzzled over the American project. For readers who crave the intimate texture of history, the diary offers a front-row seat to the Roaring Twenties from a perspective rarely heard: a sophisticated British woman, scalpel-sharp and unexpectedly tender, making sense of a world that had not yet learned to make sense of itself.
