History - Modern (1750+), Religion/Spirituality

In the late 1880s, a Boston housewife named Leonora Piper descended into trance states and began speaking with voices from beyond the grave. What she said was verifiable, specific, and nearly impossible to fake: names, dates, family secrets known only to the dead. The Scientific American called her "the most remarkable medium living." Michael Sage's account traces the meticulous investigations conducted by the Society for Psychical Research, including the psychologist William James and the relentless fraud-hunter Richard Hodgson, both of whom found themselves unexpectedly baffled. Through detailed séance transcripts and rigorous testimony, Sage documents the birth of a genuine scientific dilemma: here was a working-class woman with no apparent motive for deception, producing information she could not plausibly have known. The book captures a pivotal moment when some of the brightest minds in America and Britain entertainedsomething that today remains still unresolved: whether the dead truly speak, or whether human consciousness hides capacities we have yet to understand. It remains a fascinating period document for anyone curious about the origins of the debate over life after death.
