Mr. Wu

This early 20th-century anthology brings together three writers drawn to the complexities of cultural encounter between East and West. Through narrative prose and epistolary forms, the collection examines the tensions and fascinations that defined an era of increasing global connection. The stories within grapple with questions of tradition versus modernity, the romance and peril of the unfamiliar, and the ways in which Western audiences both desired and misunderstood Chinese culture. Louise Jordan Miln draws on her direct experience of Chinese life to ground the collection in specificity, while Harold Owen and Harry M. Vernon explore the psychological and emotional dimensions of cross-cultural contact. These are not simple tales of opposition but layered examinations of desire, misunderstanding, and the peculiar intimacy that emerges when civilizations collide. The anthology captures a moment when the West's imagination of the East was shifting, neither fully dismissive nor yet self-critical, making it a fascinating document of early cultural dialogue.
