Mountaineering in the Sierra Nevada

In 1872, when the Sierra Nevada remained largely unmapped and unconquered, a young geologist named Clarence King ventured into these jagged peaks with little more than rope, grit, and an insatiable curiosity about the earth itself. This memoir records those ascents, where King and his companions scaled walls of granite that had never seen a human footprint, camped in cirques carved by ancient glaciers, and documented rock formations that would reshape American geological understanding. As a leading figure in California's Geological Survey and later as the founding director of the U.S. Geological Survey, King brought scientific rigor to his mountaineering, yet never lost the pure thrill of climbing into the unknown. The book captures a singular moment in American history when westward expansion coincided with the birth of modern geology, and when the Sierra Nevada's remote wilderness still held secrets waiting for the first observer to record them.
