Mountain Idylls, and Other Poems

These poems were born from darkness. Alfred Castner King lost his sight in a Colorado mining accident, yet found a way to see more vividly than most: through memory, through sound, through the raw elemental presence of the San Juan Mountains that surround him. Known in his lifetime as the "Blind Poet of the San Juans," King composed verse of startling tactile richness, conjuring ridge and canyon, snowfall and starlight, the resonance of a miner's pick against stone. His long-form works some stretching over a hundred lines pour out in a single breath, recited from an unfailing memory. Here is frontier Colorado rendered with the precision of someone who could no longer look but never stopped witnessing. The collection captures not just mountain grandeur, but the particular solitude of a man alone with his thoughts, wrestling beauty from loss. For readers who crave poetry with roots in American soil, who want to feel the weight of a landscape and the quiet triumph of an indomitable spirit.
