Mother Goose or the Old Nursery Rhymes

These aren't just nursery rhymes. They're the oldest stories in the English language, fragments of medieval ballads and street songs that have been whispered to children for five hundred years. Kate Greenaway's 1881 collection gathers the surviving treasures - "Little Bo-Peep," "Jack and Jill," "Humpty Dumpty" - and wraps them in watercolors so delicate they feel like memories themselves. Her illustrations depict children in bonnets and breeches wandering through a countryside that never quite existed, a pastoral England of apple blossoms and golden light that Victorian city dwellers could only dream about. This is the book that taught generations of parents how to sing their children to sleep, and how to remember their own childhoods in the process. Whether you're reading aloud to a three-year-old or rediscovering why these rhymes have endured for centuries, Greenaway's Mother Goose remains the gold standard: warm, whimsical, and utterly transporting.
