Montreal, 1535-1914. Vol. 2. Under British Rule, 1760-1914

In 1760, Montreal surrendered to British forces, and everything changed. Or did it? This rigorous early 20th-century history traces the remarkable story of a city that never fully became British, even as it lived under British rule for over 150 years. Atherton examines the extraordinary tension between French and British Montrealers, two peoples sharing streets, markets, and municipal life, each shaping the other in ways neither intended. The narrative begins with the dramatic capitulation, introducing figures like General Amherst and Governor Vaudreuil, capturing the mixed emotions of conquest: British triumph and French resignation. But what unfolds is far more nuanced than simple colonial narrative. The book traces Montreal's evolution into a bilingual metropolis where merchants, politicians, priests, and ordinary citizens navigated competing loyalties and forged something genuinely new. Atherton's balanced approach respects both perspectives, making this essential reading for anyone seeking to understand how a conquered French city became the complex, layered place it is today.
