Miscellanies upon Various Subjects

John Aubrey was a man obsessed with the curious and the unexplained, and this 1696 collection is his cabinet of wonders. Opening with a disarmingly personal autobiographical sketch - he writes of his nervous childhood, his passion for antiquities, his dread of thunder - Aubrey then wanders through a landscape of dreams, omens, and portents that he took with utter seriousness. He catalogs unlucky days, examines whether certain dates carry inherent fatality, collects ghost stories, and notes remarkable coincidences across history. What makes this strange, appealing book so fascinating is precisely its pre-scientific temperament: Aubrey collects and observes with the earnestness of a naturalist, but his specimens are folklore, superstition, and the uncanny patterns he glimpsed in the past. This is empirical curiosity in its infancy, mixed with the beliefs of a world that had not yet fully separated magic from method. For readers who delight in the odd corners of old books, who wonder how our ancestors thought, or who simply want to spend time with a curious, kindly, somewhat obsessive 17th-century mind, these Miscellanies remain oddly irresistible.
