Memories of My Life: From My Early Days in Scotland Till the Present Day in Adelaide

At ten years old, with her mother dead and her father unable to keep her, J.S.O. Allen entered service in a Scottish baker's household, one of twelve men and a handful of women in a home that never stopped working. She locked the journeymen in at night, woke them at dawn, carried the keys through dark stone stairs. This memoir follows her from that cramped household in Denny, past the coal-blackened streets of mining families, through decades of labor, and finally across the sea to Adelaide. What emerges is not nostalgia but clear-eyed remembrance: the particular exhaustion of domestic service, the small rebellions, the friendships forged in shared work. Allen writes without self-pity, offering instead an unvarnished account of a working-class woman's life at the turn of the twentieth century. Her journey from household servant to Australian emigrant is both deeply personal and historically invaluable, a record of the women whose labor built communities on two continents, whose names rarely appear in any history but their own.
