Memories of Childhood's Slavery Days

There is a particular kind of horror in remembering childhood as a place of joy while knowing what your parents endured to give you those moments. Annie L. Burton does not spare her reader the contradictions. She writes as a woman looking back at herself as a girl on a Southern plantation, watching the world through eyes that didn't yet understand what "property" meant when applied to her own body. The memoir captures those early years with remarkable clarity, the games with children both Black and white, the rhythms of plantation life, the songs her mother sang. Yet beneath this runs a current of dread: the inadequate rations, the ever-present possibility of being sold away, the whispered fears of adults. When the war ends, Burton confronts a different kind of uncertainty. What does freedom mean when you've never been allowed to imagine it? Her account doesn't lecture or explain. It simply remembers, with all the complexity and contradiction that implies.
