Memoirs (vieux Souvenirs) of the Prince De Joinville

A rare, intimate portrait of French royal childhood on the eve of revolution, written by a prince who lived it. François-Ferdinand d'Orléans, Duke of Joinville, recalls his early years in the turbulent aftermath of Napoleon's fall, dinners with the aging Louis XVIII, the weight of royal ceremony, the companionship of siblings who would one day become exiles. We glimpse the inner life of the palace: tutors and lessons, the pageantry of court, a child's-eye view of a world about to crack. The memoir carries an elegiac weight, even as it describes moments of genuine family joy, because Joinville wrote knowing that by 1830, everything had changed. This is primary source testimony from the heart of the Bourbon dynasty in its final years, an invaluable window into a vanished world, told by someone who both belonged to it and survived its collapse.
