Maurine and Other Poems

Ella Wheeler Wilcox's debut poetry collection opens with "Maurine," a narrative sequence that captures the tender anxieties of late Victorian womanhood. On a luminous June morning, Maurine La Pelle sews and sings while awaiting her friend Vivian Dangerfield, whose arrival sets in motion a delicate dance of affection and rivalry. The two engage in spirited debate about the depths of female friendship, with Maurine defending the sacred bond she shares with Helen Trevor against Vivian's skeptical questioning. When Helen arrives, the triangular arrangement of their affections creates a poignant tension between loyalty and longing, jealousy and love. The collection pulses with Wilcox's signature romantic fervor, exploring how hearts navigate the treacherous waters of attachment, competition, and the fear of loss. These verses, written with accessible sentiment and earnest emotion, capture a moment when women's friendships were both celebrated and questioned, and when the boundaries between camaraderie and romance remained deliciously, painfully unclear. For readers who savor the emotional directness of Victorian popular poetry, Maurine offers a window into how Wilcox's generation understood the complex architecture of the heart.
