Matins

Matins is a lyrical collection of poems from the late 19th century that awakens readers to the sacred quiet of early morning. The title itself refers to the canonical hour of dawn prayer, and throughout these verses the author invites us into that liminal space between darkness and light, where the world holds its breath and the soul turns inward. These are poems of contemplation and reverie, tracing the passage of time through the seasons and the human heart. Nature becomes a mirror for inner experience: spring's renewal echoes hope, winter's silence confronts mortality, and the eternal recurrence of dawn suggests something resilient in the human spirit. The collection moves between celebration and sorrow, finding beauty in both the vibrancy of summer and the solemnity of autumn's decline. What emerges is a profound meditation on the relationship between body and soul, the fleeting nature of joy, and the deep kinship between humanity and the natural world. These are poems to read at daybreak, when the boundary between sleeping and waking dissolves, and the reader, like the speaker, stands at the threshold of something sacred.
