Maternity: Letters from Working-Women

This is a collection of letters written by working-class women in early 20th century Britain, speaking plainly about what it means to mother while surviving. These are not polished testimonies. They are raw, urgent letters addressed to health visitors, social workers, and officials, pleas for help that also happen to be extraordinary acts of testimony. The women describe the physical exhaustion of factory work done while pregnant, the terror of affording neither food nor a doctor, the grief of infants who did not survive. What emerges is a picture of a society where motherhood was celebrated in poetry but punished in policy, where women were valued as workers and reproducers but afforded neither rest nor dignity. This is a historical document that reads like testimony, quiet in its devastation. It endures because the questions these women asked about the cost of raising children while poor have never been fully answered.
