Mary Russell Mitford and Her Surroundings

Constance Hill's 1920 biography captures a writer whose sunny temperament lit up everything she touched. Mary Russell Mitford, author of the groundbreaking Our Village, transformed ordinary English rural life into literature that breathed with hay-fields and hawthorn. Hill traces Mitford's journey from a loving childhood in Alresford among vivid village characters, the cobbler, the blacksmith, the barber, through the family's financial reverses in Reading, to her unforgettable days in Lyme Regis where she collected fossils and watched storms crash against the coast. The biography sparkles with Mitford's own brilliantly witty letters, her secret awakening to theatre and Molière, and the colorful French émigrés who animated her supper table. We see the child who won a lottery on her tenth birthday, the shy schoolgirl at the Abbey, the ambitious young playwright. Hill's purpose is clear: to show how the places and people of Mitford's world fed the imagination that created Our Village's intimate, unvarnished portraits of English country life. For lovers of literary biography, Georgian England, and writers who found paradise in their own back gardens.
