Marie Corelli: The Writer and the Woman

Marie Corelli was the J.K. Rowling of her day, a literary superstar who sold tens of thousands of copies while critics dismissed her work as melodramatic drivel. This 1903 biography, authorized by Corelli herself, captures the extraordinary phenomenon of a woman who believed she communicated with the Virgin Mary, lived in a Gothic mansion surrounded by white peacocks, and wrote novels that readers devoured with almost religious fervor. R.S. Warren Bell offers not critical distance but worship, producing something closer to a eulogy than investigation. The book reveals far more about how Corelli wanted to be seen than about her actual life, offering instead extended analyses of her novels and breathless declarations of her genius. Yet this is precisely what makes it invaluable: an intimate portrait of self-mythology in action, showing how celebrity biography functions as both worship and artifice. For anyone interested in Victorian literary culture, the economics of fame, or the curious gap between popular and critical success, this remains a fascinating artifact from an era when one woman could be simultaneously adored and ridiculed with equal intensity.
