Margaret Mahaney Talks About Turkeys

A practical manual meets memoir from 1913, when turkey farming was a demanding art and women like Margaret Mahaney were building the industry from the ground up. Mahaney writes not from an academic office but from decades in the pen, and her voice carries the hard-won confidence of someone who has actually done the work. She walks through selecting breeding stock, managing feed, preventing disease, and maintaining the patience and sanitation that separate success from failure. The chapter on blackhead alone, that dread plague of turkey yards, reflects a woman who lost flocks and learned from every loss. What elevates this beyond a simple how-to guide is her willingness to share failures alongside victories, making the reader feel the weight of a winter lost to illness and the triumph of a healthy spring hatch. For historians of American agriculture, for homesteaders, or for anyone curious about the hands-on knowledge that fed a nation before industrial farming, this is a genuine artifact from a vanished world.
