Man-of-War Life

Published in 1844, 'Man-of-War Life' by Charles Nordhoff is an autobiographical account of his experiences as a young sailor in the U.S. Navy. At just 14 years old, Nordhoff embarked on a journey aboard the USS Columbus, a 74-gun ship, crossing the Equator six times and visiting various countries in Southeast Asia and South America. His narrative captures the essence of life aboard a sailing warship during its final days, providing insights into naval life and the diplomatic missions to China and Japan aimed at expanding American trade.
