Makers and Romance of Alabama History

Written in the late 19th century by B. F. Riley, this volume offers a window into how Alabamians of that era understood and mythologized their own past. Riley weaves biographical sketches of governors, warriors, and statesmen into dramatic narratives of Alabama's transformation from indigenous territory into a modern commonwealth. The book opens with stories of exploration and early settlement, tracing the state's evolution through its most influential citizens and colorful events. Riley dedicates his work to the women of Alabama, acknowledging their overlooked contributions to the state's founding and growth. The 'romance' in the title signals Riley's intent to tell history as stirring narrative rather than dry chronicle, embracing the heroic and tragic figures who shaped Alabama's identity. For modern readers, this book functions less as authoritative history and more as a fascinating primary source: it reveals the myths, values, and collective memory that Alabama's 19th-century elite chose to celebrate. Those interested in Southern history, regional identity formation, or how past generations narrated their own origins will find this a compelling artifact of its time.
