Louis Riel, Martyr Du Nord-Ouest: Sa Vie, Son Procès, Sa Mort

In 1885, the Canadian government executed Louis Riel, Métis leader and prophet of the North-West. This passionate 19th-century defense, written in French, refuses to call it justice. Instead, it names what Riel's contemporaries felt in their bones: that a government which had ignored the Métis for decades, broken its promises, and manipulated public opinion through compliant newspapers, had simply eliminated a man who dared to demand fairness. The text traces Riel's journey from charismatic leader of a displaced people to his tragic end in Regina, arguing that his trial was theater and his death a political murder. The author, writing from deep grief and conviction, presents Riel as a martyr whose suffering mirrors that of his people, abandoned by a nation that promised them protection then forgot them. This is not neutral history; it is advocacy from an era when the wounds were still fresh and French Canadians mourned a prophet killed by the English state.
