Lord John Russell

He helped write the rulebook for modern democracy. Lord John Russell rose from aristocratic privilege to become one of Victorian Britain's most consequential reformers, championing the expansion of voting rights, defending civil liberties against authoritarian backlash, and serving twice as Prime Minister during an era of relentless social upheaval. Stuart J. Reid's biography, written in the late 19th century when the battles Russell fought were still fresh wounds, traces the arc of a political life dedicated to the radical proposition that government should answer to the governed. The book follows Russell from his privileged upbringing and formative European travels, through his emergence as a voice for reform in the House of Commons, to his pivotal role in steering Britain through episodes of radical ferment. Reid offers both the public achievements and the private character that drove them, revealing how an aristocrat became democracy's unexpected champion. For readers interested in the making of modern Britain, this is a portrait of the man who helped transform a constitutional monarchy into a functioning democracy.
