Loom and Spindle: Or Life Among the Early Mill Girls with a Sketch of "The Lowell Offering" and Some of Its Contributors

Loom and Spindle, published in 1898 by Harriet Jane Hanson Robinson, is a first-person account of life among the early mill girls in Lowell, Massachusetts. Robinson, who began working in the textile mills at age ten, reflects on the significant societal changes brought about by industrialization and the opportunities it afforded women for economic independence and education. The narrative highlights the resilience of these women and their contributions to the factory system, as well as their involvement in the literary magazine, The Lowell Offering. This work provides a unique perspective on the intersection of gender, labor, and social conditions in 19th-century America.
