Little Helpers

The story follows young Johnny Leslie in the days leading up to his first Fourth of July oration, a rare honor for a boy his age, but also a burden he barely understands. Vandegrift captures something timeless about childhood: the way responsibility arrives before we're ready for it, cloaked in adult expectations and hometown pride. Johnny stumbles through encounters with friends who test his sense of fairness, makes mistakes he's ashamed of, and learns, largely through his mother's quiet wisdom, what it means to stand for something larger than himself. The novel is less about fireworks and celebration than about the smaller explosions inside a child trying to figure out who he is. It's a window into late Victorian American childhood, where civic duty and moral character were taught early and often. For readers who appreciate gentle historical fiction, or anyone who remembers the weight of a first public moment, Little Helpers endures as a quiet, kind portrait of growing up.
