Little Almond Blossoms: A Book of Chinese Stories for Children

Step into the luminous streets of early 1900s San Francisco Chinatown through the eyes of its youngest residents. This enchanting collection follows children like spirited Chung Goy, whose heart races at the thundering approach of a dragon parade sweeping through lantern-lit streets, and the adventurous sisters Poon Chew and Poon Yet, who discover wonder in every corner of their vibrant neighborhood. The stories burst open with the explosive joy of Chinese New Year, where firecrackers crackle and paper dragons dance, capturing that rare childhood sensation of the world feeling utterly magical. Knox writes with genuine affection for the community she depicts, weaving threads of tradition, family warmth, and the ordinary miracles that fill a child's day. These are quiet adventures, tender ones, the kind where the greatest expedition might be following the dragon or learning to help in a grandmother's kitchen. The book offers a window into a world that existed over a century ago, where children's voices rang through cobblestone streets and every festival was a cathedral of light and sound.
