Literature for Children

This early 20th-century manual tackles a question that still haunts parents and educators: how do we lead children toward books that nourish rather than merely entertain? Orton Lowe wrote in an era of anxiety about "sensationalist" reading material flooding the market, and his guide offers a spirited defense of classic literature, poetry, and read-aloud culture as antidotes to intellectual shallowness. Drawing on his background in education, Lowe provides practical advice for cultivating taste, memorization techniques, and strategies for making great stories come alive in the classroom and home. The book is a product of its time, prescriptively favoring certain canonical works over others, but it captures something enduring about the desire to pass the literary torch to the next generation. For readers interested in the history of childhood reading, the evolution of children's literature pedagogy, or period perspectives on the reading wars, this serves as a valuable artifact.
