Lilliput Lyrics

In Lilliput, children rule. This is the world W. B. Rands created in 1899: a miniature universe where young voices carry the day and the letter-box on the wall brings notes from friends like Ruth and Rob. The verses capture childhood not as a prelude to adulthood but as a kingdom unto itself, full of dolls, garden adventures, and the particular magic of a rainy afternoon. These are poems written to be spoken aloud, to be giggled over, to be memorized by heart. Rands understands something essential about how children think in images and impulses. A doll has feelings. A puddle is an ocean. The grass is a country you must conquer in your bare feet. The collection endures because it never condescends. It treats childhood as a place worth celebrating, not fixing. For anyone who loved a toy, climbed a tree, or wrote a letter to someone who might write back.
