Lilith: The Legend of the First Woman

Ada Langworthy Collier

Poetry

Before Eve, there was Lilith. Ada Langworthy Collier's 1885 narrative poem revives a legend that patriarchal tradition tried to erase: the first woman, born from the same dust as Adam, who refused to kneel. In Collier's telling, Lilith stands in the garden beside the man she was paired with, but when he fails to acknowledge her as equal, she makes a choice that costs her Paradise. A guardian angel warns her that the world beyond the walls of Eden is harsh, cold, unforgiving. She leaves anyway. What follows is a bittersweet journey of self-discovery, as Lilith transforms from a woman wronged into something more universal: the embodiment of mother-love itself, the whisper in every lullaby sung to sleeping children. Written in lush, Victorian verse that somehow feels startlingly modern in its feminism, this is not the Lilith of later demonology but the one the rabbis first imagined, reimagined for an age that was beginning to ask different questions about what women owed themselves. The poem asks what is lost when a voice is silenced from history, and answers with quiet, enduring power.

“Thy wife, not handmaid I, yet thou dost say, ‘I first in Eden rule.’ Thou, then, hast sway. Must I, my Adam, mutely follow thee? Run at thy bidding, crouch beside thy knee? Lift up (when thou dost bid me) timid eyes? Not so will Lilith dwell in Paradise.””
