Life of Sir William Wallace of Elderslie, Vol. 2 (of 2)

Volume two opens with William Wallace at the height of his power: named Guardian of Scotland, his forces arrayed against the might of Edward I's armies. What follows is both triumph and tragedy. Carrick chronicles Wallace's brilliant campaigns, castle seizures, guerrilla warfare, the forging of a unified Scottish resistance, but centers the narrative on the poison that would undo every victory: the jealousy and treachery of Scotland's own nobles. These men, unwilling to bow to a commoner turned guardian, scheme against the one man who might actually win their freedom. The book builds inexorably toward Falkirk, where the flower of Scottish knighthood fails Wallace on the field, and toward the lonely end that awaits a hero who could defeat an empire but never overcome the smallness of his own lords. Carrick writes with 19th-century romantic fervor, giving Wallace the dimensions of legend while grounding his account in the brutal political realities of 13th-century Scotland. This is history told as tragedy: the story of a man who became Scotland's protector only to be abandoned by Scotland's elite.
