Life of J. E. B. Stuart

Mary L. Williamson's biography of J.E.B. Stuart captures one of the Civil War's most charismatic and controversial figures. Stuart rose from Virginia military academy graduate to become the Confederacy's most celebrated cavalry commander, earning Lee's trust and Union forces' grudging admiration through audacious raids and relentless reconnaissance. Williamson draws on personal correspondence and official records to paint a portrait of a man whose boldness on the battlefield was matched only by his flair for drama and reconnaissance. The biography traces his education at West Point, his pre-war career as an officer on the frontier, and his meteoric rise during the Civil War where his cavalry became the eyes and ears of the Army of Northern Virginia. But Williamson also addresses the costs of such aggression - the near-disastrous capture at Chancellorsville, the controversy over his raid on Chambersburg, and the fatal wound at Yellow Tavern that cut short a brilliant career at age thirty-one. For readers interested in military history or the complex figures who shaped the Civil War, this early 20th century biography offers a window into how Stuart was remembered and evaluated by those who knew him.
