Life of Frances Power Cobbe, as told

Frances Power Cobbe lived a life of firsts: one of the first Victorian women to support herself through writing, a founding voice in the movements for women's rights and animal welfare, and an intellectual who refused the quiet retirement society prescribed for women of her class. This autobiography, completed shortly before her death in 1904 and supplemented by her literary executor Blanche Atkinson, traces her journey from wealthy Irish upbringing to becoming a public figure in an era when respectable women simply did not appear in print. Cobbe writes with sharp wit and conviction about her work with suffragists, her controversial views on marriage and independence, and her later turn toward spiritualism. The book stands as a vital primary source for understanding the generation of women who laid the groundwork for twentieth-century feminism, told in prose that is both period-specific and startlingly modern in its directness. Anyone curious about the roots of modern social movements, or the particular constraints and possibilities available to intelligent women in Victorian England, will find this memoir indispensable.
