Life of Father Hecker

This 1891 biography ignited one of the most explosive controversies in American Catholic history. Isaac Thomas Hecker, the German-born founder of the Paulist Fathers, emerges as a magnetic and restless figure who bridged immigrant experience with revolutionary religious vision. Walter Elliott chronicles Hecker's journey from his mother's influence in a German New York household to his founding of a missionary society that sought to make Catholicism speak to American modernity. The narrative captures his deep bond with his mother, his early aversion to conventional piety, and his fierce drive toward social justice that would eventually reshape Catholic missionary work in America. When this biography appeared in European translation, it sparked the infamous 'Americanism controversy,' with Vatican critics accusing Hecker and his followers of compromising Catholic orthodoxy through their embrace of American culture and individual conscience. The book remains a window into the tensions between immigrant identity, religious conformity, and the价格在 American religious landscape at the turn of the century.
