Life in the Clearings Versus the Bush

Published in the mid-19th century, 'Life in the Clearings Versus the Bush' by Susanna Moodie is a historical account that contrasts the civilization of settlements in Upper Canada with the challenges of wilderness life. Drawing from her own experiences as an emigrant, Moodie reflects on the struggles and aspirations of settlers, detailing their disillusionments and the harsh realities of frontier living. The narrative also captures her emotional journey and observations of social customs during her travels from Belleville to Niagara Falls, providing valuable insights into Canadian society of the time.
