Life and Public Services of John Quincy Adams, Sixth President of the United States, with the Eulogy Delivered Before the Legislature of New York

William H. Seward, later Lincoln's Secretary of State, composed this intimate political portrait in the aftermath of John Quincy Adams's death in 1848. Rather than distant historical treatment, Seward offers a contemporary's reckoning with a man who shaped American democracy across five decades: diplomat, secretary of state, sixth president, and finally congressman fighting courageously against slavery. The biography traces Adams's arc from Puritan childhood beneath the shadow of his revolutionary father through his extraordinary diplomatic career and into his post-presidential years, where he became perhaps the most principled abolitionist in Congress. Seward, himself a future architect of American policy, writes with the conviction of a political ally who understood Adams's fierce commitment to national integrity and individual liberty. The included eulogy delivered before the New York legislature adds ceremonial weight to this portrait of a man who embodied the earliest ideals of the Republic. This book matters because it captures Adams at the moment of his death, before historical distance softened or sharpened his legacy, written by someone who witnessed firsthand the political battles Adams fought.
