Life and Adventures of Frank and Jesse James, the Noted Western Outlaws

This 1880 account captures the James brothers at the height of their mythmaking, written when the outlaw brothers were still alive and still robbing. J. A. Dacus traces the transformation of preacher's sons into the most celebrated outlaws in American history, beginning with their Missouri childhood under their mother Zeref's fierce protection after their father's early death. The narrative follows them into Quantrill's guerrilla band during the Civil War, where violence became trade and loyalty meant survival, then into the legendary train and bank robberies that made them folk heroes to a public weary of Reconstruction's corrupt government. Dacus writes with the breathless urgency of a journalist who knows his subjects are still dangerous, still capable of another daylight robbery. This is where the American outlaw myth begins: not in Hollywood, but in the desperate imagination of a post-war people looking for heroes who thumbed their noses at authority.
