Library Ideals
1918

In 1918, as the world recalibrated after the Great War and a pandemic swept the globe, a librarian named Henry E. Legler sat down to articulate a radical vision. Libraries, he argued, were not mere repositories of books but active engines of democracy itself: institutions with the power to dismantle ignorance, level playing fields, and cultivate what he called "enlightened citizenship." This collection of essays, written with the fervor of a true believer, makes the case that equal access to knowledge is not a luxury but the very foundation of a functioning republic. Legler was no detached administrator. He cared deeply about children in poverty, immigrant communities struggling to find footing, and the urban masses whose voices were rarely heard in civic life. He believed libraries had an obligation to reach beyond their marble walls, to become active agents of social betterment through community engagement and outreach. Reading these essays a century later, one feels both the historical specificity of his moment and the eerie timeliness of his concerns: What do we owe each other in a democracy? Who gets to know things, and who decides? What should libraries be in an age of upheaval? For anyone who believes that libraries matter, that knowledge is power, and that the ideal of equal access to information is worth fighting for, Legler's eloquent manifesto remains a provocation and a provocation worth heeding.
