Liber Monstrorum: The Book of Monsters

The Liber Monstrorum de Diversis Generibus is an anonymous Anglo-Latin catalogue of marvelous creatures, composed around 650-750 AD in Anglo-Saxon England. Often attributed to Aldhelm of Malmesbury, this work is divided into three books that explore monstrous humans, beasts, and serpents. Drawing on classical sources such as Virgil, Pliny, Isidore of Seville, and the Alexander Romance, the author presents a blend of learned skepticism and fascinated reporting, which is particularly notable in its reference to King Hygelac of the Geats, linking it to the epic narrative of Beowulf. This Lex translation is informed by the Haupt 1863 critical edition, providing a modern interpretation of this historical text.
