Libahunt: Draama Wiies Vaatuses

In a remote Estonian village circa 1810, a family takes in a young girl whose mother has just been executed as a witch. Raised alongside their own daughter and son, she becomes Tiina, passionate, beautiful, and doomed from the moment she crosses their threshold. Ten years later, the son Margus must choose a wife according to family tradition: he must marry his foster sister to preserve their bloodline. But love obeys no such laws. Margus falls for Tiina instead, and the household fractures along lines of desire, duty, and ancient prejudice. The village, whisperingly convinced that Tiina is a libahunt, a being who transforms into a wolf, turns savagely against her. When her foster sister Mari accuses her of slaughtering livestock, the community's superstitions crystallize into violence. Heartbroken and hunted, Tiina runs into the frozen forest, and the tragedy unfolds with the inevitability of Greek drama. August Kitzberg's 1912 masterpiece is a stark portrait of how superstition, class prejudice, and the bonds of serfdom crush individual lives, and how love, when it dares to cross forbidden lines, becomes the most dangerous force in a world built on fear.
