Letters from Rome on the Council

In 1869, the Catholic Church convened the First Vatican Council, and the world watched as centuries of theological politics reached a boiling point. This collection of letters, written from inside Rome during the council's deliberations, captures the most consequential ecclesiastical debate of the nineteenth century: whether the Pope should be declared infallible when speaking ex cathedra on matters of faith and morals. The correspondents, including the noted theologian Johann Joseph Ignaz von Döllinger himself, document the intense maneuvering, the fears of bishops who saw papal supremacy as a threat to their own authority, and the growing realization that the council's outcome would reshape the Church forever. These are not dry diplomatic cables but intimate dispatches from the heart of a institution in crisis. The letters reveal the profound anxiety among those who opposed the new dogma, viewing it as not merely a doctrinal matter but a political power grab that would bind the Church to an inflexible position incompatible with modern states. Döllinger's collection preserves the voices of those who lost this battle, whose names were later excised from Catholic memory, and whose resistance anticipated the theological fissures that would eventually split into the Old Catholic movement. For anyone interested in the hidden machinery of religious power, this is indispensable primary source material.
