Letters from Port Royal: Written at the Time of the Civil War (1862-1868)

These are the voices of the Civil War you will not find in textbooks. In 1861, the Union captured Port Royal, South Carolina, and the Sea Islands became an unprecedented experiment in freedom. Northern teachers, missionaries, and abolitionists poured in to help formerly enslaved people build new lives. What they found was messier, more complicated, and more human than any ideology could account for. The letters gathered here, centered on Edward S. Philbrick and his fellow volunteers, capture the daily reality of that transformation. They wrestling with labor contracts, crop failures, the slow building of trust, and the sheer strangeness of negotiating a world without slavery. You hear the excitement and the doubt, the paternalism and the genuine affection. This is history from inside the room where it happened. For anyone seeking to understand the Civil War era beyond generals and battles, these letters offer something rare: ordinary people navigating extraordinary times, making it up as they went along.
