Le Péril Jaune

A bracing counterargument to one of history's most toxic fears. Written in the late 19th century when 'Yellow Peril' hysteria swept across Europe, this sociological treatise directly challenges the anxious fantasy that Chinese workers would destroy Western civilization through cheap labor. Yakov Novikov dissects the economic arguments of his contemporaries piece by piece, demonstrating that wages are shaped by market forces and opportunity, not racial character. He predicts that as industry evolves and education spreads, all workers will benefit. The result is a surprising, almost radical work: a 19th-century text that refuses to bow to racial panic, instead arguing for the dignity and equal potential of laboring people everywhere. It reads now as both a historical document of its anxious era and a quietly progressive polemic against the economic justifications for racism.
