Later Poems

Meynell's poetry operates in quiet registers. These are poems that ask readers to slow down, to attend to the subtle movements of the heart and the natural world. Written in the later years of her career, this collection gathers her most contemplative work: verses on motherhood that ache with tenderness, nature poems that find the sacred in the ordinary, and reflections on faith that never quite resolve into certainty. She writes about grief and love with the same careful attention, each poem a kind of vigil. The imagery is precise and luminous, light falling through leaves, the weight of a sleeping child, the mind as a flock wandering without a shepherd. There's a quiet radicalism in her refusal to grandstand, in her insistence that small things matter. For readers who find beauty in restraint, who prefer whispers to declarations, these poems offer a rare kind of companionship.
