Langs Rotte, Maas En Schie. I.schetsen Uit De Geschiedenis Van Rotterdam

This early 20th-century historical sketch traces Rotterdam's remarkable transformation from a primeval marshland into one of Europe's great port cities. Droogendijk invites readers to imagine a Germanic traveler arriving two millennia ago, finding only windswept sandbanks rising from the Wilde Venen, those wild peat bogs that stretched endlessly along what would become the Rotte, Maas, and Schie rivers. The narrative follows the slow emergence of human settlement along these waterways, the gradual reclaiming of wetlands, and the strategic advantages that would eventually make Rotterdam the wealthiest city in the Netherlands. Written for schoolchildren but rich enough to reward adult readers, this work sits at the intersection of geography, social history, and civic pride. Droogendijk connects the physical landscape to Rotterdam's emergence as a trading powerhouse, showing how the very terrain that seemed so inhospitable became the foundation of its greatness. The book captures a particular moment in Dutch historical writing when educators sought to make the past alive and local for young minds, grounding national history in the specific soils and waterways of a single city.
