Lady Daisy, and Other Stories

A child loses her beloved doll at the seaside and learns that love requires care. This is the tender anguish at the heart of "Lady Daisy," the title tale of a collection that understands something true about childhood: that small losses can feel enormous, and that we learn responsibility through the weight of our inattention. Flora's innocent forgetfulness during a family trip leads Lady Daisy through misfortunes salt water and sand - a gentle tragedy played out with the soft fatalism of Victorian children's literature. Other stories extend this meditation on love and its fragility. "Papa's Christmas Story" and "Story of a Glowworm" explore how families nurture and protect their cherished creations - whether those creations are children, bedtime stories, or living things touched by wonder. The writing carries the gentle rhythms of late 19th-century prose, but the emotional landscapes feel startlingly current. This is for readers who loved "The Secret Garden" or "Little Women" - who understand that children's literature at its best speaks to something timeless: the way small lessons become the foundations of character.
