King Winter

A Victorian poem that brings winter to life as a literal king. King Winter emerges from his Frozen Zone palace alongside Jack Frost, journeying across the landscape to blanket the world in snow and ice. The narrative unfolds as a mother telling her children about these winter adventures, describing the playful activities that follow in the king's wake: snowmen rising from yards, sleds racing down hills, frozen ponds becoming rinks. There's a gentle moral thread running through the verse, good children receive Christmas treats while the naughty get a symbolic birch rod. The poem captures something precious about that liminal space between the old world and modern childhood, when winter was not just a season but a visiting force with intentions and personality. It belongs on the shelf with other vintage holiday treasures, perfect for reading aloud on a cold evening.
