King of the Jews: A Story of Christ's Last Days on Earth

In the final week of his life, Jesus returns to Jerusalem and overturns the tables of the money changers in God's house, a violent act that announces the coming storm. As he rides through the gates on a colt, the crowd cries Hosanna, but the religious leaders seethe with fear and plotting. Over the days that follow, Stead captures the unbearable tension: the intimate Last Supper where bread is broken and predictions of betrayal hang in the air, the desperate hours in the garden, the kiss of Judas, the kangaroo court of the priests. This is not scripture but a dramatic retelling filtered through the Oberammergau Passion Play and refracted through the sensibilities of late Victorian England, giving the familiar narrative an almost theatrical intensity and a journalist's eye for human drama. Stead renders the psychological stakes of these final days with raw clarity, making the reader feel the weight of what approaches.
