Kinder- und Hausmärchen (1812/15) Teil 3
This is the Grimm brothers as they first gathered the tales: raw, unflinching, and far stranger than you remember. The 1812/15 first edition contains versions that would be recognizable but alien: Rapunzel, pregnant and weeping in her tower; Hansel and Gretel abandoned not by a wicked stepmother but by their own mother; the Pied Piper带走所有孩子 with no happy return. The collection also preserves stories that vanished from later editions entirely, including Puss in Boots, inherited from French Huguenot tradition. These were not yet the softened bedtime stories of bourgeois Victorian imagination but something older and more honest about how the world treats the vulnerable. The brothers collected from living storytellers, and the original editions preserve that rawness: cruelty without sentiment, survival without guarantees. This is the document the UNESCO inscribed as World Documentary Heritage, the version that Freud read, that Wagner transformed, that changed how we understand folklore itself. For anyone who thought they knew these stories, this reveals them as something wilder.
